Types of Funds
The Surrey Foundation offers a variety of ways for you to create a lasting legacy that would support a range of community based projects and organizations. If you wish to establish a fund with the Surrey Foundation, you may choose any of the following options: Field of Interest Fund, Unrestricted Fund, Advised Fund, Designated Fund, and Agency Endowment Fund.
The fund’s initial capital and any further contributions to the fund are held permanently and managed by the Foundation’s Investment Committee. Only the income earned on the capital is disbursed to registered charitable organizations. Grants are made in accordance with the purpose of the fund, as specified in the trust agreement which sets out the terms of the fund. You may name the endowment fund – for yourself, family members or friends; for a company; to convey a purpose or goal of the fund; or, for a special meaning to you.
The minimum amount to establish a fund is $10,000. If you are unable to contribute the initial amount of $10,000, there are other options for you to become a donor. If this is the case, we encourage you to contact our office to discuss your charitable goals.
Field of Interest Fund - the income from the fund is distributed through one or more of the Foundation’s fields of interest. Rather than specifying a charitable organization to receive the grant(s), you would indicate a field of interest to be supported by your fund. This gives the Grant Committee broad discretion to select agencies that can effectively meet your charitable purpose. The fields of interest are:
- Animal Welfare
- Arts & Culture
- Athletics
- Education
- Environment
- Family & Seniors
- Health
- Heritage
- Youth
Unrestricted Fund allows your charitable giving to have the greatest impact on community issues as they emerge, granting to the community’s most critical needs. Grants from the fund are disbursed only after applications for funding are assessed by the Grant Committee and recommendations for approval are passed by the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
Advised Fund allows you the flexibility to participate in grant making from your fund, retaining the right to give advice and recommendations for disbursement of the income. Your level of involvement may include a letter advising the agency you wish to support indefinitely, provide advice annually about which organization you would like to support, or ask us to provide suggestions on community issues and projects in a specific field of interest.
Designated Fund allows you to direct income to one or more charitable organizations you have identified as recipients. The Foundation is not directly involved in the grant making process with this type of fund, however, benefits from the direct contact with the recipient organization(s) who support the needs of the community.
Agency Endowment Fund, under administration by the Surrey Foundation, allows a charitable organization to establish a fund that supports its charitable purposes in perpetuity. Should the organization cease to exist, the Foundation would direct the funds to another organization with the same or similar purpose.
Other options are available if you wish to make a contribution to the Surrey Foundation without establishing a fund. A donation may be made to:
- Any or all field of interest funds
- The community fund
- The Operating Capital of the Foundation
- A specified open fund, such as an agency endowment fund
