Douglas Hooser – born in Surrey in 1922, Mr. Hooser began his career as curator of the Surrey Museum in 1962. He became a passionate custodian of Surrey’s history, helping to create the Surrey Museum and Historical Society and acting as the first chair of the City’s Heritage Advisory Committee. From 1962 to 1987, Mr. Hooser oversaw four expansions to the museum and built up what was originally a small collection of early agricultural, forestry and engineering works into a collection of over 50,000 artifacts and archival documents which represents and reflects Surrey’s history. In 2003, Mr. Hooser established endowment funds with the Surrey Foundation as a legacy of his life’s work with the museum.

The Friends of the Surrey Museum Endowment Fund provides assistance to the Surrey Museum & Archives Society in acquiring new technologies and equipment to preserve and present local history.  Mr. Hooser’s generous donation, half of which was matched by the BC Arts Renaissance Fund in 2006, totals more than $750,000. Douglas Hooser passed away in early 2006, leaving a legacy that will continue to ensure Surrey’s history is sustained and made accessible to current and future generations.
