Designated Funds
We've spent the last few editions of my column discussing community foundations and how you and other residents in Surrey can get involved. This week I'd like to highlight a specific type of fund we manage at the Surrey Foundation, called a Designated Fund, which gives you the freedom to choose how your dollars are invested in the community.
Mr. Douglas Hooser, for example, was a long time supporter of the Surrey Museum & Archives Society and an advocate for the protection of Surrey's history. At his retirement, he created a living legacy by establishing and donating to the "Friends of the Surrey Museum Fund" to support the acquisition of new technologies and the preservation of equipment at Surrey's museum. When Mr. Hooser passed away, he provided a further donation through his estate. In keeping with his wishes, this fund provides an annual grant to the Society and ensures Mr. Hooser's dedication to preserving local history lives on.
The "Jordan Powell Legacy Fund" is another successful example. The family of Jordan Powell, a young man who passed away from cancer, created a legacy for their son and his passion for music. They established a scholarship fund in support of post-secondary education for a student graduating from Holy Cross Regional High School, Jordan's former school. Families and friends across Canada have contributed to the growth of the fund and it now provides two annual scholarships to music students.
These are two great examples of a Designated Fund, which allows you to specifically direct granting income from your fund.
If you have any questions about our funds or how we can work with you to ensure your contributions have a meaningful impact in the community, please call us at 604.591.2699 or email info@surreyfoundation.org
