Scholarship Funds
Regular readers of this column may have noticed the trend forming over the past few months as I've covered the various types of endowment funds held by community foundations. I hope you have seen the differences among funds and the level of flexibility that working with your local foundation provides donors. One of the most significant benefits that every fund type offers is a lasting legacy. Endowment funds ensure the original intent of a donor's contribution is honored today, and in the future.
This month I'd like to focus on another type of fund - Scholarship Funds. The Surrey Foundation has a number of scholarship funds; all of them provide grants to students from various educational institutions in Surrey and surrounding communities. As many of us remember, it's never been easy to afford post-secondary education. With various scholarship funds available in the community, not only is assistance available to students, but also the fund becomes an investment in the quality of our labour force and enhances the perspective, understanding and capabilities of our citizens.
A wonderful example of a successful scholarship fund is the Surrey Education Fund, established in 2003 by the Surrey Retired Teachers Association. It provides an annual scholarship to graduating students in School District #36. Contributions are accepted to this fund regularly from the Association itself, individuals wanting to donate in memory of a colleague, and/or businesses who are intereted in supporting young men and women in Surrey pursuing post-secondary education.
Scholarship Funds are a great way to support students in your community, and once the fund is established, it will continue to provide scholarships to students annually.
